Summary

Chemical analysis of soils is the most widespread tool for evaluating soil fertility, its advantage lies in its predictive nature, that is, the conditions that will affect plant growth are identified based on the results obtained. The purpose of this presentation is to provide information to guide the interpretation of soil analysis results, with the aim of recommending fertilizers and amendments in coffee production systems. To address the issue, initially the precautions recommended to take samples for analysis are presented in relation to time, site, depth, and form of the sampling. Next, analytical laboratory methods are presented, emphasizing that the results interpretation of soil analysis and the respective classification (low, medium and high) must be supported by specific laboratory methods, previously correlated with the plant response. Subsequently, there is a reference to the units used in the results of soil analysis and the convenience of using the International System of Units is clarified. Next, the following chemical properties of the soil are explored: pH, exchangeable aluminum (Al3+), exchangeable bases (calcium-Ca2+, magnesium-Mg2+, potassium-K+ and sodium-Na+), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), percentage of exchangeable aluminum saturation, organic matter, total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), micronutrients and electrical conductivity. Finally, the values used to interpret the results of the soil analyses are presented according to the laboratory methodologies used for coffee. Besides, the fact that the interpretation of the low, medium and high categories depends on each property is clarified. The presentation content is based on the Cenicafé Technical Advance 497: Interpretation of soil analysis results. Support for adequate nutrition of coffee plantations.
