The adequate nutrition of coffee plantations is essential to obtain high and good quality productions. This presentation aims to address some aspects that must be considered when defining plans for nutrition through soil fertility management. Regarding nutrients, general considerations of coffee requirements, accumulation in fruits, removal by harvest, deficiency symptoms and effect on coffee productivity are presented. It comments on the properties that determine soil fertility and the relationship with the balance of nutrients (income and expenses of the system). The objective and the importance of fertilization, the factors that affect its efficiency, and related economic aspects are presented; also, the recommendations for macronutrients are summarized according to the results of soil analysis and the production system. Basic information on fertilizers, types, formulations and degrees of common use in coffee for the different crop development stages as well as technical and economic criteria to consider are described. The fertilization times are described taking into account the amount and distribution of the rain, likewise, general comments are made in relation to the form and site of the fertilizers application. Finally, the importance of soil acidity management, as a practice that increases the efficiency in the use of nutrients, is emphasized.
