Summary

The seminar Coffee Varieties: plant them to ensure productivity and quality shows the state of the art of plant breeding in Colombia. The journey began in 1938 when Cenicafé was created along with its the Plant Breeding Program. As of that date, Coffea arabica materials from different origins began to arrive and constituted the Colombian Coffee Collection. Later, Caturra variety and Timor Hybrid arrived in 1952 and in 1961, respectively. Seven years later a crossbreeding program that would give rise to 14 improved varieties of coffee given to Colombian coffee growers since 1982 was implemented. Cenicafé chose to use composite varieties, which means that they are a mixture of different improved lineages that differ in their resistance to rust, but share excellent agronomic attributes such as production, quality of physical grain and sensory properties of the drink. The main point of this strategy is the use of genetic diversity to obtain varieties with durable resistance to rust. This seminar explains how rust resistance operates in FNC varieties and how the structure of Colombian coffee growing has evolved in terms of varieties. Finally, the characteristics of the current commercial varieties of coffee are described.
