Weather corresponds to changes of the climatic variables in a given place and time, and climate is characterized by weather states and evolutions during a given period of time and a given place or region. Meteorology is the study of the weather in instants or short periods, while climatology studies the climate and its variations over time. Because of its location, the Colombian coffee region is defined as tropical mountain climate, in which different factors of climatic variability such as tropical waves, seasonal and intra-seasonal oscillations and, particularly, the intertropical confluence zone have an effect on climatic events and determine changes in production systems. The launch of the coffee meteorological observatory in 1949 has allowed us to understand climatic behavior and its relationship with crops and their environment. Several key aspects of the study of the main climatic elements have been put at the service of other areas of knowledge in order to consolidate the essential technological options for the production and profitability of coffee in Colombia. The following aspects stand out: wet and dry periods have been defined as a planning strategy, the relationship between the historical analysis of temperatures and the duration of plant phenological processes has been established and, the importance of sunlight as determinant of the production potential in each zone has been corroborated. In the seminar, participants will be able to look into several of the aforementioned aspects and will have better foundations to understand the challenges imposed by changing climate conditions.
